After you’ve been injured you likely will receive a phone call from the other person’s insurance company. The insurance company rep will probably be very friendly and will tell you that he or she just wants to hear your side of the story. The rep will also ask for your permission to record the conversation to make sure they get it right. At this point you are entering a danger zone and should politely say “no thanks, I want to talk to a lawyer first.” The insurance company rep is a trained professional whose job it is to limit the insurance company’s financial exposure. The rep will do his or her best to get you to say something that is harmful to your case. If you make a harmful admission in a recorded statement, it can be very difficult to pursue your claim later. Always talk to a lawyer first before making any statements to anyone, especially an insurance company.
